L&D Overview

NCH is a Pathway to Excellence hospital that has seen a 25% volume increase in Labor and Delivery. This growth has created new opportunities for L&D RNs. Our L&D department includes:

  • 10 L&D rooms
  • 5 bay triage
  • 4 high risk antepartum/progressive care rooms
  • 5 postpartum overflow beds
  • 18 bay Level II NICU
  • 27 mom/baby rooms and a transition nursery

We service both clinic and private populations with a very diverse patient base. NCH follows a nurse to patient ratio of 1-2:1 (depending on acuity).

Best practices from the very start

Our L&D team is streamlined to deliver the highest quality care and to allow our RNs to grow their practice through different care roles and support.

  • The hand-off concept features defined RN roles for each step in care – from triage to labor to nurse. A baby nurse is on all shifts to attend to newborns and then care is handed-off to the mother/baby nurse on a different unit.
  • Practicing skin-to-skin in both vaginal deliveries and in our ORs with continued work to increase breastfeeding rates
  • 24/7 access to a dedicated in-house physician and neonatologist

Technology at work

NCH’s commitment to technology has resulted in the highest quality of care possible and has gained NCH Healthcare the Most Wired Award for three years in a row. Our L&D cutting-edge technology includes:

  • State-of-the-art Corometrics fetal monitoring
  • Electronic documentation using Cerner maternity system as well as FetalLink (Cerner).
  • Bar code scanning in L&D and the OR for medication administration
  • Monica fetal heart-rate monitors using Bluetooth technology
  • B.Braun IV infusion pumps that assist with medication administration titration

Career growth and development

Our CNO has a vision to elevate the level of nursing from the job category to the professional category. To support and promote the profession of nursing, our RNs benefit from:

  • Ongoing communication and the opportunity to seek out growth
  • A focus on advancement of our nurses as part of our magnet journey
  • The ASPIRE program that allows nurses to advance their practice with shared decision making
